Background Story Visit my webpage at www.caringbridge.org At 31 weeks gestation I was told my baby was very sick and I needed to be sent to the hospital right away because he was severely anemic from a rare blood disorder called Diamond Blackfan Anemia which is genetic and runs in our family both Journey's dad www.caringbridge.org and Grandpa have it as well. Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA) is a rare blood disorder, characterized by a failure of the bone marrow (the center of the bone where blood cells are made) to produce red blood cells. This failure causes DBA patients to become severely anemic. Journey's hemoglobin was so low he had severe hydrops and was in heart failure they transfused Journey at 31 weeks and then tried again at 33 weeks which put me into labour. Journey was born at 33 weeks and was expected to come out code blue but he was a nice color and had a good set of lungs he was born April 12 2011 at 4lbs 7oz and 17in. long. Journey was also diagnosed with TOF & DORV the same day he was diagnosed with DBA it was a very upsetting day for us to learn our baby boy was so sick and may not live. Journey had a full repair surgery on Wednesday June 8th 2011 @7:30am at the Stollery Children's Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta everything went pretty good and he finally came home for the very first time in his life on July 3rd 2011 just a few days before turning 3 months old.
